DESCRIPTION
A copiously illustrated global history of magic books, from ancient papyri to pulp paperbacks “A beautiful production: a typographic and calligraphic treat as treasurable as a rare magical text itself. Almost every page is filled with wonder.”—Suzi Feay, The Spectator Grimoires, textbooks of magic and occult knowledge, have existed through the ages alongside other magic and religious texts in part because of the need to create a physical record of magical phenomena, but also to enact magic through spells and rituals. To understand the history of these texts is to understand the influence of the major religions, the development of early science, the cultural influence of print, the growth of literacy, the social impact of colonialism, and the expansion of esoteric cultures across the oceans. In more than two hundred color illustrations from ancient times to the present, renowned scholar Owen Davies examines little-studied artistic qualities of grimoires, revealing a unique world of design and imagination. The book takes a global approach, considering Egyptian and Greek papyri, ancient Chinese bamboo scripts, South American pulp prints, and Japanese demon encyclopedias, among other examples. This book will enchant readers interested in the history of magic and science, as well as in book and manuscript history.

Extensive illustrations and photos of ancient artifacts that profess, proclaim & protect as they show the range of the human mind. Superstition and ignorance are where those who are more assured can persuade those who are confused and terrified of the dark unknown that contains evil. This is where spells and enchantments take the place of fear and substitute confidence in a process that convinces the one being helped as it changes their mind through a convincing show of magic. When we're so civilized these practitioners become con-men and charlatans but the mind is still the same, and almost the same process of substitution is used by those who treat the mentally distressed to cure them of some obsessive habit, some aberration that has latched onto them, but we call it a different thing. The range of illustrations with paragraphs of explanation is fascinating. This is a book to page through while admiring the skill and talent from all of those cultures that all had this one thing (Magic) in common. This was important to so many people because they really didn't understand much about their world except it could be a scary and dangerous place where they needed to believe in something that could provide a better future. It was when there was a god or patron saint or ancient one to protect one from sickness or poverty or insecurity, and that system worked on the mind to allow a miracle if you believed it to be true.
