The author’s passion for literature in the face of occasional adolescent apathy, common core, and other 21st century challenges is utterly refreshing. But so much more than a “teacher book” or a “student book” is contained within the beautifully written pages….A deftly-woven tapestry of personal anecdotes, heartfelt narratives, history, math, pop culture (past and present), politics, religion, literature (of course), priceless life lessons and more. Elegant prose sprinkled with colloquial, lighthearted, humble commentary....The author is clearly an intellectual who never makes the reader feel like she’s an intellectual. Highly relatable for everyone and, if the reader can’t relate, Ms. Gavin’s unwavering enthusiasm and eloquent delivery compel us to want to learn more. Erudite and profound, poignant and comical….I laughed aloud, only to turn a page and feel a proverbial lump swell in my throat. The author’s considerable wisdom and experience transport us through her spot-on ruminations on communication, connection, compassion, empathy, selfies, self-awareness, suffering, joy, love, loss…life itself. All of the human condition is reflected in these pages, which mirrors the author’s message. Indeed, all literature contains the human condition, and this great read accomplishes the very same. Ms. Gavin’s students and employers are so very fortunate to be in the pedagogical presence of this remarkably talented teacher!
