These books are great read for my kids, they have lots of jokes and my daughters keep giggling while reading them. Now, I am no prude and I am prone to swearing here and there, but I think these books have a bit too much it seems. I have young avid readers who love the subject matter. It seems everyday they are telling me about more swearing in the books. And not just hell and damn either. I dunno. Just something to consider. I think when adults swear it's part of life, but with kids, I'm turned off by it, and I don't want to encourage it, at least until they are older. Given this info, I am still going to let them read the books. Just a heads up for parents who aren't ok with swearing at all, maybe pass on this series.I like the set, bought it for my son's birthday and the jokes and comics are a nice way to keep him engaged, my only problem with the set so far is some of the pages weren't cut properly so I had to cut them myself, other than that I am really happy with the books. My 11 y/o has a rather dry science curriculum, this is a great supplement. It has tons of little activities and experiments. There is also a quiz at the end of the book, nothing crazy. We learn new and interesting facts and the books do a great job of explaining some of the more complex topics. My 7yo son loves these books. He's an advanced reader. I think the content of the books would appeal to children as old as 12. My son tried to tell me he wasn't going to do his other school work if I didn't let him have another one of the books from the box after he finished the first one. :D Although I have some curriculum, I try to let my son's interests guide our homeschooling. These books make it easy. The book on electricity kicked off our week of learning about electricity - putting the snap-circuits (also a great purchase) to use.The books are great however the quality of paper and the binding is poor. The pages come off easily from the spine and the paper is very thin and dull. These are fantastic for kids who love facts and the gross parts of science. We'll be using them to supplement what our kids (8, 11, 13) are learning from science this year during distance learning. It's easy enough for the 13 year old to read on her own, and simple enough for the 8 year old to understand when they're read out loud.I recently bought this for my daughter's Christmas present and she loves it totally ...the only thing is that it might not be the perfect ''present' sort of thing. This isn't your fault of course Amazon... wish I could just rate this product 4.9 stars. Well... anyway, this is a good product, the books are really interesting, and everything was in perfectly excellent condition. Good luck reading!!!!These are definitely brilliant. First of all non fiction is a great way to get reluctant readers into books and the grosser it is the better for that. I have found that using these or excerpts from these is a good way to get some of the pupils at older ages groups but who are below average readers interested. They are not an easy read for younger and struggling children but interest is what we are after here. These are very like the horrible history series except without the option of watching the TV instead.Personally I bought a set for my son (6 years old) because of his ongoing fascination with science. Reading them is a little beyond him but only because the nature of the subject means the occasional convoluted latin or medical phrase has to get used so he was quite happy reading about different sorts of plants and animals but gets thrown by dropping in terms like "eukaryote". So it's probably aimed at the 8 year and upward age groups and now I use it by reading and editing on the fly and picking the right book to go with whatever we've been doing recently. So if he's shoved a splinter into his finger we'll have blood, bones and body bits, if we've been staring a bits of plant then tonight's bedtime reading is vicious veg.In short this wins on all fronts. You can tie them in with other activities, older or better readers can read them independently and reluctant readers can be interested.I bought this box set understanding it was a ‘second’ somehow. Hence the reduction in price. I assumed this would relate to the physical quality of the books. I wasn’t aware that defect was that a book was MISSING. I would not have paid for an incomplete box set and I gave a very disappointed child. I can’t now check if this error is my fault because I misread the original listing or the fault of the seller, as the original description is no longer available. This uncertainty doesn’t help the seller or me.My daughter said that this was one of the most amazing set she’s got! The problem was because I asked for the same day delivery, the set came very late and it kept my bookworm awake until midnight.Warning: if you have a bookworm, don’t give this set to him/her unless it’s morning and he/she gets whole day to read! These have been loved and not put down since my daughter received them for Christmas. She loves them, but be prepared to hear disgusting facts over the dinner table/ a board game, anywhere. I started reading one and couldn't put it down.If you like Horrible Histories, you will like these!Into the depths of disgusting facts, gruesome revelations and gripping science you go. These books can command the undivided attention of the old and the young. One of my sons is dyslexic and the format of these books is very manageable- providing snippet caption boxes of information that can need not read in chronological order. Another of my sons is an avid reader and views these as real page turners, scouring the pages for the most delictably dispicable nuggets of science to disgust and amaze his class mates and siblings alike. The box is colourful and saves on storage. I would have paid RRP for such quality and quantity, nonetheless delighted to have purchased at such a bargain price.
